Brockbank Elementary is collecting "Pennies for Patients" to support the The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Money earned will be used to care for patients and to help with research. What is Leukemia? Leukemia is a type of cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow, the spongy center of bones where our blood cells are formed. The disease develops when blood cells produced in the bone marrow grow out of control. The "Kid Power" sixth-grade student council members met and decided to have a school wide competition where teams consist of classrooms.   For example, Mrs. Larina Quispe's class is one team and Mrs. Cynthia Loreen's class is another team and so forth. At the kick-off assembly each student received a box to put their change in. Each Friday in March, the money will be collected and there will be a winning class. Then each Monday the competition starts again; there will be three winning classes when the fundraiser ends. Brockbank's goal is to teach students that each of them has the power to make a difference by bringing in their quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies. The object is not to go door-to-door and solicit money from family or neighbors - we want students to bring in their own pocket change and donate it to a worthy cause. If your student wants to bring money, have them earn it by doing chores. The fundraiser begins this week and continues for the next three weeks.
