Brockbank Second-Graders Enjoy Visit from the Rainforest Van!

Submitted by brenda.johnson on
On Tuesday, September 25, Brockbank second-grade students were delighted to have a special presentation from instructors, Jackie Pendleton and Jessica Jones, of the Rainforest Van. The Rainforest Van is an education program offered by Living Planet Aquarium to second-graders. The seven continents of the world were located on a huge floor map rug and the tropical rainforest areas were highlighted with an overlay. Students pretended to travel to five of the continents where they were able to really see and touch many of the rainforest animals that are native to that area. The Halloween moon crab really was black and orange. The giant African millipede looked like a short fat snake with legs. The crested gecko was brown and had little bumps all over it. They petted it with one finger, gently, on its back. The cane toad is very poisonous so they couldn’t touch it. They also saw White’s tree frog, an adult and a baby cave cockroach, and a Madagascar hissing cockroach. The shiny exoskeleton of the cockroaches felt very hard and smooth. What an exciting way to learn about tropical rainforest animals!
